Warm sand, hot sun and cool breezes feel fabulous but can wreak havoc on your skin, which is why it is so important to take extra care of yourself. From personal experience, I have found the summer to be even harsher on my skin than the winter months – especially on my feet! Running around in flip flops and chasing toddlers through the sand isn’t the best combination for your tootsies; they can quickly turn quite dry if you don’t take care of them.
I have a bit of a weakness for beauty products and love to test the latest and greatest in skincare, bath and beauty. These are some of my ultimate mom ‘must-haves’ for the summer season.
Slather on The Sunscreen Tans are gorgeous and darker skin is something many of us moms try to attain in the warmer months, but sadly, the sun is good for you in moderation only and can cause skin damage and in excess can increase your chances of skin cancer. As much as I worship the sun, I slather the sunscreen on myself as well as my children. Forget the SPF 15 and opt for something that provides a minimum of SPF 35 (SPF 50 is even better).
If you want a little color, try using a self-tanner or gradual tanning lotion to give your skin a little glow. It’s much healthier and safer for your skin!
Exfoliate! Cool showers feel fabulous and can perk up your mood on hot sweltering days, but don’t forget to exfoliate! Loofahs, body scrubs or pumice stones are great for getting rid of dry skin on your feet and/or body. Just be sure to use them with a non-drying soap or cleanser. Well polished skin tends to absorb moisturizer more efficiently.
Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize
Whether you are expecting a baby or have already given birth, a good, rich moisturizer is your best friend in the summer season. Basq is a brand that I have loved for several years now, using their products throughout my second and third pregnancies. Their It’s a Small World Body Butter is made from all-natural ingredients and comes in a thick, rich butter that moms-to-be can use to improve the elasticity of their growing belly and everyone else can use to moisturize their parched skin. The great thing about this butter is that it can also be used safely on infants and babies.

Give Your Locks a Little Love Don’t forget about your hair! Chlorine, salt water and the sun can dry out your locks, causing split ends and fly-aways. I like to use a hair mask every 2 weeks or so to put the moisture back in my hair and to help fight against the elements. Two additional solutions: hair oil or an extra rich conditioning treatment.
Polish Up Freshly painted toes are adorable in sandals and a pedicure can go a long way for one’s overall well being (especially when you are pregnant!). Bright Corals, Soft Pinks, Candy Reds and Turquoise shades are super hot this summer. I’m really digging the new Vintage Minnie Mouse Collection by OPI. They are fabulous for mother-daughter manicures too ;).

Review of Product:My Sister In Law is pregnant and due very soon! I gave her this 9 Month Stretch Essentials Kit a few months ago to use and let me know what she thought. She told me she loved the products and found them to be very helpful in her quest to keep her skin during pregnancy perfect! She thought the citrus sugar body polish was a delightful scent and the exfoliation of the polish left her skin always bright looking. Her favorite was the stretch mark butter – not only did it smell yummy but it has helped keep her stretch marks at a minimum. The resilient body oil left her skin feeling soft but never greasy. She is excited to continue to use these great products!
I recently discovered the company Basq when I was researching healthy skin care lines. I was sent the Basq Resilient Body Oil to try, which is a product that helps with stretch marks.
Basq was designed to appeal to women and men in all life stages. From pregnancy to weight loss, sensitive skin to mature skin and all the combinations in between. They have a series of stretch mark products that work from prevention to repair. Stretch marks can be caused by pregnancy, weight loss, growth spurts, and even strength training. They also have products that help with balancing hormones, like their Rebalancing Face Cleanser. For rest and relaxation, they have products with wonderful aromas and textures. Every product is tested rigorously for allergy and sensitivity, and they are all paraben, phthalate, and animal testing free.
They also have a huge celebrity following! Some of the beauties who love their products include Heidi Klum, Christy Turlington, Marcia Cross, Sheryl Crow, Diana Krall, Jennifer Lopez, Angelina Jolie, Gwyneth Paltrow, Brooke Shields, and Linda Evangelista. Maybe it's not that big of a deal that these women love the products, but celebrities could afford a $500 bottle of stretch mark elixir with real gold and diamond flecks in it, so if THIS is good enough for them, it's good enough for me too.
I don't have a lot of stretch marks. I have a couple on each side of my stomach that I've had since 8th grade when I had a HUGE growth spurt- I've been 5'11" since middle school FYI. The ones I do have are a white-ish silver and I never think about them because they're practically invisible. Even so, I'm going through a huge weight gain being pregnant and it's important to keep my skin moisturized so as it stretches and pulls it doesn't lack in moisture or elasticity and it stays in good shape.
When you screw off the lid to this, there is no control top lid, it's just open. I like to pour a little bit in my hand and apply to my stomach, arms, thighs and anywhere else I feel like could use a little TLC. I like that it doesn't sit on my skin, it sinks right in and does its job. It has a light scent that goes away as soon as it's applied. The bottle is glass which could be good or bad. Do you drop things often? It would not be fun to break a bottle of body oil on the floor. But if that's not a concern to you it's truly a great product!
I can't wait to see what Jessica has tried from the company!

I just discovered a new brand that will now be my go-to baby shower gift! Basq has this product line that is called It’s a Small World. First off, the Loving Touch Gift Set is ALREADY beautifully packaged for you, so you really do not even need to wrap for a shower. It in this beautiful gold box, that I personally plan on keeping as storage later on….and the products are beautifully packaged inside the box. Then, the products are wonderful and simply hold their own. The really amazing thing about them is that they can be used on both Mommy and baby, or in our case Mommy and 5 year old!
So here I am trying out the Lavender Body Butter for Mom and Baby when my almost five year old comes over and decides he “wants to smell good too” So, I applied the butter on him, and we are both now smelling pretty darn awesome, AND we are very moisturized because this is a THICK creamy butter, that does a FANTASTIC job in the moisturizing department as well!
Originally, I did not read the Dream Lavender and Sleep Mist Box very well, and sprayed this on me. Oops…it is apparently a room spray, which smells great. It is pretty light smelling, but totally does the job. As I type this, I am feeling a little sleepy *yawn* or that could just be the pregnancy talking.
My beautifully packaged Loving Touch Gift Set
I just couldn’t bring myself to save the Nourishing Cleansing Bar for Mom and Baby for THE BABY, and have been using it myself. It lathers very well, and has a pretty decent lavender aroma to it! I personally love it, and all things lavender to be honest!
The Lavender Calming Oil is great, but definitely something I will be saving for bedtime for baby. I’ve never been a huge fan of oils and this has a pretty strong scent. I will definitely only be using a small amount on baby at bedtime to help relax and soothe it to sleep.
Again, this will now be my go-to gift set for baby showers! It is WONDERFUL and I am impressed with every single product inside! Every new mom and baby deserves to be pampered, and these products will do just that.

G!veaway: Basq and Disney Offer Sweet Smelling Skin Care Products
July 3, 2012
The last few months have been really busy for me. And it’s been tough trying to find a way to soothe myself from all of the action. Not really an easy thing to do with my kids and grandbaby around.
But thank goodness I can bask in the beauty of being a woman and one of the sweet treasures of being a lady is the sweet pleasure of discovering new products and perfumes that serve as the perfect accoutrements to my bustling beauty collection.
I’ve had the pleasure of trying some wonderful products from Disney’s It’s a Small World Collection and Basq and they have teamed up to offer some sweet-smelling products that are truly medicinal to me!
Yes, these products have helped to make me feel good, calm and centered when I’ve needed it most. Basq has the most amazing, sweet smelling Nourishing and Cleansing Bar, that is for both mom and baby, a Lavender Calming Oil and a delicious smelling Lavender Dream Mist that is fresh and refreshing. These products are in their newest Loving Touch Kit.
The Lavender Calming Oil is one of my favs. Oils are known to fuel the skin’s natural hydration and healing process in the dermis layer of skin where stretch marks form, and yeah, I’ve got a few of those! Basq’s Almond Oil blends some of the finest oils available for full body toning and stretch mark care. The aroma is light yet very fragrant.
There are just some things you have to have in your bathroom and for me, I have to have all of my perfumes lined up and ready to go. These Basq products are must-haves for me because the sweet mist and sprays can also be used on babies and kids. That saves me a pretty penny especially because my kids love to come into my bathroom and try to use my more expensive perfumes and sprays. Now they can luxuriate and smell sweet with mommy’s new Basq products.
And I know they will love the all natural moisturizing LOVE soap when taking their nightly baths.
The Dream Lavender Sleep Mist has been a great nighttime aid for me when putting my grandbaby to sleep. After a cool bath, I have rubbed her little chunky legs with the Calming Oil, sprayed the Dream Mist on her and watched her eyes flutter while she has fallen asleep.
I recommend it because it works! And I love taking a nighttime shower and spraying the mist right before climbing into bed. It’s the best.
For all of my Cincomom readers you too can order these wonderful Basq products and receive 20% off your order when you use the code CMM20 at checkout at www.basqitsasmallworld.com and www.basqnyc.com. You’ll get 20% off your order. (It expires 7/31/12)
I’d also like to give away one of the wonderful Loving Touch Kits from Basq has given me to enjoy! Tell me below in the comments section just why these soothing oils would be a perfect compliment to your life! Good luck! Contest ends July 15th!
I need to fill you in on a secret … I have stretch marks. If I could make these words illegal, I would do so in a heartbeat. I have tried so many products to help me get rid of these evil marks, but most didn’t even lighten them up—waste of money and my time. So when I heard about Basq Skincare, I just knew I had to get my hands on their products!
Basq was created when two moms couldn’t find anything safe that was worth using during their pregnancies. After working with the best minds in beauty, skin science and aromatherapy they created Basq Skincare. As moms, they know how much we dread stretch marks. Whether we get them from pregnancy, weight loss, or growth spurts, they knew they needed to create products that actually worked. And I am here to tell you, they did!
I have been using their Citrus Sugar Body Polish for a couple weeks now and I’ve noticed a big change in the appearance of my stretch marks. They are not gone, but definitely not as noticeable anymore. On top of being thrilled about lightening my stretch marks, the sugar scrub makes my skin feel so amazing. You know how soft a newborn’s skin feels? Yep, that’s how my skin feels after every shower now.
Why it works:
Sugar exfoliation keeps skin in a constant state of renewal and rejuvenation, sloughing away dull layers that leave skin dry and dull. Rosehip oil has great skin rejuvenating properties due trans-retinoic acid, the component responsible for its remarkable cell healing and fortification capabilities. It also contains essential fatty acids Omega-6 and Omega 3 which renew damaged skin. Grapeseed oil contains a high amount of linoleic acid, which nourishes skin to keep it smooth and hydrated. The nutrients in grapeseed oil absorb deeply to fight free radicals and stop some of the enzymes that destroy skin functioning which leads to drying. Hazelnut oil is rich in essential fatty acids that deeply hydrate and repair. Wheatgerm oil has a high content of linoleic acid, oleic palmitic and stearic fatty acids that help in healthy cell regeneration for skin repair. Shea Butter is particularly high in essential fatty acids plus vitamins A, E and F skin nourishment and moisturizing.
As amazing as the Citrus Sugar Body Polish is, it is only step one in fighting and repairing stretch marks. I have been obsessing using their Illipe Body Butter and oh my gosh, if you could wrap up Heaven and store it in a lotion container, that is exactly what they did. The Illipe Body Butter is a beautiful, thick butter that fortifies skin from the inside out and a perfect way to fight stretch marks all over the body. Although super rich, their blend absorbs quickly and deeply like other butters don’t, giving skin super-deep nourishment without a heavy, greasy feel.
Why it works:
Shea butter is particularly high in essential fatty acids, vitamins A, E and F, and widely used for moisturizing and rejuvenating the skin to prevent premature aging and to cure damaged skin. Jojoba butter is an excellent moisturizer that supports skin regeneration. Borage seed oil has the highest concentration of gamma linolenic acid an Omega-6 essential fatty acid for skin nourishment and strengthening. Rosehip oil has a high content of essential fatty acids known specifically to heals scars and restore normal skin color. Grape seed oil is abundant in fatty acid linoleic acid, that critically helps maintain the health of cell membranes, supports regeneration and restructuring of damaged, stressed skin tissue.
I am not the only one obsessing over Basq Skincare products, Heidi Klum is just one of the many celebrities who love Basq as well.
All Basq products are rigorously clinically tested for ZERO skin allergies and irritants. The line is paraben, phthalate and animal testing-free. You can learn about all their amazing products by visiting: www.basqnyc.com and stay up-to-date by liking them on Facebook.

Chemical-Free Scrub - The key to healthy elastic skin is to exfoliate, sweeping away the dull, itchy top skin layer and prompting cellular renewal in the lower layers where stretch marks occur. With the combination of natural ingredients, including shea butter and other nourishing essential oils Basq Sugar Body Polish is made to penetrate deeply for intense skin fortification and elasticity. When I was pregnant with my son, I was a chipper 24 year old that had resilient-as-all-hell skin that could stand up to a 55 pound weight gain (that’s right, I was a house… and I didn’t have the wild Captain Crunch diet of Jessica Simpson, either). This time around I’m a few years older and a wee bit wiser- I’ve got to oil my thorax up to avoid all the wild stretch marks that so commonly plague women. I’ve tried a bunch out, and as far as the luxury category goes, I’m totally in love with Basq’s Resilient Body Oil. For starters, it’s velvety smooth and not so overwhelmingly thick that you feel goopy after. The consistency is just right, but it’s also loaded with rosehip oil, sweet almond oil, and a ton of other magically safe and beautiful ingredients that’ll leave your feeling feeling and looking like a natural dream. And the best part is that it sort of smells like sweetened Moroccan mint tea, and around my house (I’m married to a Moroccan man), that’s pretty good <3
In June, I set Groove, Move, and Improve goals for my holistic health and wellness journey as part of my involvement with the Simmworks Weight Loss Challenge (a group of bloggers banding together to create healthier lifestyles.)
My Improve goals were to "Respect and find time/ways to enhance my outer self. Discover new ways to alleviate stress and encourage harmony." To accomplish for June, I scheduled time for a pedicure (way fun and relaxing!) tried Yoga via DVD (a bit uncomfortable for this newbie, but refreshing,) and I focused on skin care and cleaning up my beauty routine (aka making room for beauty in the bathroom.)
In my journey towards better skin care and stress alleviation, I expanded my knowledge of the fabulous Basq product line. Basq Cucumber Eye Gel, offering instant eye refreshment, was a quality product I already loved, so when I had the opportunity to try the Basq Rebalancing Facial Cleanser and the Basq Soothing Foot Relief Spa Set, I had very high hopes they would alleviate stress and encourage harmony for my health and beauty routine.
My hopes were well founded. Both proved to be high quality, high performance products that have changed my outer self for the better! (And don't you just feel great when you know you are putting forth the best view of you? I sure do!)
In a nutshell, the Basq Rebalancing Facial Cleanser exfoliates away damaged skin and prevents plugged and prominent pores, giving your skin a smoother finish. I found that this product makes my skin super soft, well hydrated, and well, simply happy and healthy. I'm totally sold on it and for the first time, actually feel like I have a face cleanser product that truly does the job well!
The Basq Soothing Foot Relief Spa Set is a total pampering product that offers an "instant fix" for your feet. The two step process includes incredible moisture enriched socks that replenish, smooth and revive feet followed by Basq Energizing Lotion (included in the set,) which is a cooling soothing lotion that revives and moisturizes tired feet and legs. Again, this product delivers as promised... When I went to get a pedicure, I was tickled to have the pampering, soft and hydrated skin, and super cute toes after, but I knew from experience by the end of my shower that night, all the soft hydration from the lotions would dissipate. Fortunately, I had my Basq Soothing Foot Relief Spa Set ready to use that night and when I woke up in the morning and pulled the socks off, my feet were in even better condition (softer, smoother, fully hydrated) then they were after my pedicure- oh happy day!! And that was prior to finishing up with the Basq Engerizing Lotion, which cinched the deal and set me up for a terrific day of well pampered feetsies.
Whenever I need a lift, after a long hike or a summer fun day (like a visit to the zoo,) the Basq Soothing Foot Relief Spa Set is there to undo the stress of the day and get my feet in the dancing mood again.
I also found out that the Basq Energizing Lotion can be used to help with body aches, such as sore shoulders and backs, and doubles as a sunburn or hot flash relief, too. Gotta adore the versatility of this unique product.
